Refining Workflow Stages

Every batch of Sheetal Drop oil goes through a rigorous multi-stage refining process to ensure purity, clarity, and natural nutritional integrity.

Degumming

Removes phospholipids and mucilaginous gums

Crude oil contains hydratable and non-hydratable phospholipids (gums) that make the oil cloudy and degrade heat stability. The oil is heated to 60–80°C, mixed with water and small amounts of food-grade acid (phosphoric or citric acid), and agitated. Phospholipids absorb water, swell, become insoluble, and are separated via high-speed centrifuges.

Bleaching

Removes pigments, trace metals, and oxidation compounds

Neutralized oil still contains colour pigments (like chlorophyll and carotenoids) and residual oxidation impurities. The oil is mixed with activated bleaching earth (clay) and activated carbon under a vacuum at 90–110°C. The clay adsorbs pigments and heavy metals, then passed through pressure leaf filters to yield light-coloured oil.

Dewaxing / Winterization

Removes high-melting point waxes

Essential for oils like sunflower, rice bran, corn, and cottonseed that contain natural waxes which cause cloudiness when refrigerated. The oil is cooled gradually to 5–10°C for several hours to allow waxes to crystallize. Wax crystals are removed through pressure filtration, ensuring the oil remains crystal-clear at room and cold temperatures.

Deodorization

Strips volatile odour compounds and residual FFAs

Removes volatile compounds responsible for unpleasant taste and smell, as well as residual free fatty acids. The oil is heated under high vacuum (1–3 mbar) to 230–260°C while natural vapor is injected from the bottom. This vapor strips away volatile aldehydes, ketones, and odoriferous compounds. The oil is rapidly cooled to prevent re-oxidation.

Polishing & Packaging

Final safety filtration and bottling

The refined oil passes through fine micronic polish filters (bag or sparkler filters) to achieve maximum clarity. Stored in stainless-steel holding tanks before automated filling into PET bottles, pouches, or tins — often flushed with nitrogen gas to prevent oxidation and extend shelf life.
